An impressive reenactment of a Macedonian Royal Hypaspist by the German Historical association Hetairoi (Εταίροι). Felicitations to them for their work.
The hypaspistae (υπασπισταί) were an elite Macedonian infantry unit of multiple military uses.
They were armed with neo-hoplite shield and spear but they could be alternatively armed with a pelte if some of their missions were based on speed and nimbleness. Concerning the rest of their equipment and appearance, they were almost like the pezhetairoi, but all the hypaspists bore a linothorax (excluding again the missions based on speed and nimbleness). The Royal Hypaspists like the one in the image, could bear bronze cuirass.
