A representation of a Chinese officer, an infantryman and a cavalryman of the Northern and Southern dynasties Period (AD 386–589) from Liu Yonghua’s excellent book on the warriors of Imperial Eras China (copyright: Liu Yonghua).
The figure on the left is an officer or a higher commander judging from his appearance. Note the lamellar armours of the infantryman, the horse and the cavalryman. The total armour of the latter and of his horse, denote his role as an “extra heavy cavalryman” (a cataphractos according to the Greco-Roman term). Note as well the solid visor of the horse.
