The term ‘Varangians’ was actually a generic term for the Byzantines, describing
a group of warriors coming from Scandinavia, the Russ lands (Kiev, Novgorod, Staraya Ladoga etc), Anglo-Saxon and Danish England and other places, but always bearing a Nordic cultural heritage. They were mostly Scandinavians or of Scandinavian origin, but they could also be Russ Slavs, Anglo-Saxons and others
